Modern Contraception

I was seeing this patient in her early twenties in my office today for contraception counseling. Her boyfriend had accompanied her. She was frustrated with hormonal birth control and they were describing their current birth control method to me.

Me - do you use condoms?
Boyfriend - Naw man, I just pull my thang out before I exploded.
Me - Do you know what they call people who use that as a form of birth control?
Patient/Boyfriend - looking bewildered
Me - Parents.

Down with the Hummer

I've decided to ride out my current Escalade as long as possible. My truck is almost paid off and I'm gonna take advantage of that. All it needs is a few bandages. I think I have my fair share of material posessions in this life. I don't need anymore. Maybe I can do some social good with the extra money as opposed to destroying my great grandchildren's environment.

Need vs Wants 2

I consider a fairly intelligent responsible individual. But I don't always make sound financial decisions. I earn a comfortable salary and mandatory retirement deductions from my practice have help me quickly build my retirement account. I still carry more debt than I need (some of it bad!!! credit card debt)

The bottom line is I need a new car. My truck is having multiple mechanical problems. I've likely spent over $1000 in various repairs over the last 3 months. I'm out of warranty, so that includes rentals while my car is repaired. I'll have it paid off by July or August this year. I could ride it out, but because I'm a medical professional, having dependable everyday commuting vehicle is important to me. 4 wheel or all wheel drive is also a necessity for me esp. in this Midwest climate. I've been hook on 4wd's ever since I owned my Jeep Wrangler back in medical school.

There are many economical and sensible 4wd's out there, but my attention is drawn toward the Hummer H2. I test drove one this weekend and loved it. I had to measure my garage on Sunday to see if it would even fit. Gas milage is also very dismal, but I'm used to that already with the shitty gas mileage in my '02 Escalade.

I was looking at low mile used vehicles to keep my payments down and still qualify for the GM 100,000 mile certified warranty. I don't need this vehicle, but I want it. I'm worried that I'm an impulse buyer, but I have researched other SUV's extensively. A Tahoe would likely be the sensible economical vehicle that meets all my needs, but I can't suppress my desire to have a Hummer.

Is it greed, immaturity, ignorance, or overcoming some shortcomings in my adolescent years. I'm not sure.

LENT

I'm giving up television for Lent.

I can see my life improving dramatically already. This is gonna be much harder than giving up Bud Light last year and I LOVE beer.

I'm frightened at the massive increase in my overall productivity if I subtract TV from my life.

I see myself reading more, spending time at coffee houses, maybe more frequent trips to the gym. I'm worried my internet consumption may also increase (I'm not sure if that is a bad thing). At least if I get addicted, there's a 12 step program out there.

Peace

Something to Remind me of Spring

A few of my over determined patients showed up at my office today braving through near blizzard conditions. Thank God, the office officially closed at 2pm and I was able to reschedule several pregnant patient. I was horrified at the thought of a mom with a "baby on board" traveling through that mess out there. I needed to pick up a shovel at Lowes and a few supplies from the grocery store utilizing my few extra hours after work.

But, before running all those errands, I went to the body shop to check on my '67 and to my suprise, she's almost finished!!! , just in need of a dusting/washing, some buffing, racing stripes and decals:-)

Snow, please melt!!!

Closed

I closed on my condo this Friday. This is the first time I've ever went to a closing and felt good. I only had to pay out $500. I was truly happy to be relieved of this burden of about $2k a month (whick includes mortgage, HOA fee, utilities, and insurance). My realtor was upset I had to pay anything, but I didn't care.

I felt horrible at the closing of my new house in June, when I still hadn't sold my condo. Everyone at the closing were trying their best to be friendly and personable, but I wanted them to just all shut up and let me sign the papers...lol.

To all you Catholics out there, I need to go back to my condo garden soon and figure out where I buried my St. Joseph's statue. It's hard now with snow on the ground:-)

I Aint Sayin She's A Gold Digga (RIP Anna)

This was originally posted on November '05

I was late for call Wed nite so I stopped a Q-doba for a burrito. I was walking toward the entrance at the same time as an attractive woman in her mid to late 20's with long black hair. I opened the door for her as not to be rude and she smiled said thank you. I was in the usual shitty mood that I'm always in before overnite call. I ended up infront of the woman with the long black hair, so I went ahead and ordered my yummy burrito. She continued to glance at me and smile. She also proceded to ask me what I was ordering and how often I come here. I was answered her politely, paid for my food, and wished her a Happy Thanksgiving. (I was in a rush)

I left Q-doba and walk toward my Escalade, she follow me outside and before I could get in my truck, she yells, " Are you a doctor?" I was wearing my blue surgical scrubs and my name tag, so it was pretty obvious. I said ,"Yes I am a doctor". She asks," what kind of doctor are you?" I replied, " I an obstetrician gynecologist". She continues, " Do you think you can help me? I went to a Mary Kay party the other day and developed a rash on my face after that." Her face looked fine, but I recommended antibiotics"

(I was really late for call and unfortunately didn't have time for a conversation, even if it could translate into a potential date)

She continues, " are you from this area? Do you have family here? Where do you live? Can you prescribe me some antibiotics for my face? What's your name? My name is ------ " The whole conversation was gettin kinda weird. By the time it was over, I even knew what kind of birth control she was on...lol.

I wished her a happy T-day again and jump into my truck. She hesitated a while , I think she wanted me to ask for her number, but she was a little bit too strange for my taste.

Do you think she had a real interest in me, or do you think it was the fact that I was wearing surgical scrubs and driving a 50K dollar SUV?

Early vs Late Bloomer

I asked a nurse today for a few individual alcohol swab packets, she reached into her scrub shirt pockets and pulled a a few alcohol packets along with several condoms that fell onto the table.

Me - What are those for?
Nurse - they're for my teenage son.
Me - What?!?!
Nurse - I just want him to be careful
Me- I didn't get laid til I was 23
Nurse - Are you bragging or complaining
Me - complaining!!!
