The Horror
I saw a gray hair in my comb this morning. I though it was lent but unfortunately it had the same fucked up curl pattern of the rest of my hair. Damn!

I Got Tagged
10 years ago: I was getting very drunk and studying very little in medical school. I still trying to figure out how and why I was elected class president?
5 years ago: I was a completing my residency, overworked and broke. Trying decided what job to take. I almost ended up in a great paying job in bum fuck rural USA....bad combination (rich and bored).
1 year ago: Pissed off because after 3 months of preparing for my boards exam, I found out I couldn't take it because of someone elses clerical error.
yesterday: Trying desperately to figure out what to eat for dinner (the most excitement of the day).
5 songs i know the word to: The Message (by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five) ......otherwise, I never pay attention to the lyrics...I'm an instrumental type of guy
5 snacks: Nilla Wafers, Jalapeno Chips (at subway); Frosted Miniwheats; chips and salsa; not so ripe bannanas.
5 things I'ed do w/ 100 million ; give 25 mil to charity to hopefully save my soul; give 25 mil to my family; beach house on the Chesapeake Bay; Aston Martin v-12 Vanquish; invest what's left over and live off the interest.
5 places I run away to: Cancun; Cozumel; Bangkok; Florida Keys; Vegas Baby
5 Things I'ed never wear: sock garters, knickers; a beret; a gold tooth; Brut by Faberge
5 Favorite TV shows/ books: Sopranos; ER; CSI; Starblazers; any book by Stephen King.
5 Greatest Joy: my family; my friends; having the ability to help others; health; freedom
5 Favorite Toys (past and present): my Big Track; my Star War's figures; my Tyco race track; Grand Theft Auto Vice City; my Mustang
After much thought I've decided not to tag any other bloggers, so I guess this vicious cycle ends with me. (sorry manic mom)

Puff, Puff, Pass
My neighbor stopped me today as I was pulling into my driveway to ask me a medical question. He is a very distinguish late middle aged businessman who lives with his wife and teenage son. He asked me how long marajuana stays in your system as it regards to a urine drug test. The question was strictly for the benifit of one of his clients. He also wanted to know if there were anyway to eliminate weed from your system rapidly.
Looks like I should take him up on the next time he invites me to dinner:-)

Not to change the subject
I staffing prisoner's clinic this week. It's a clinic mainly dedicated pregnant convicts. During the clinic they tend to make several lude comments as I walk by the waiting room.
In the past I've had my ass grabbed before by a female prison guard.
I feel so violated

Locked Up
After being cooped up in this dingy hospital for 24 hours (on call), I'm more than ready to go home. It's really wierd know that the world outside goes on while I'm stuck in one place and can't leave until my shift is up. This leads me to one realization, I could NEVER do prison time........plus the shower gang rapes would really suck too.

All is Well
My patient who was refusing blood transfusions did well during surgery, there was only minimal blood loss. I didn't let the residents operate alone given the severity of the situation if there had been massive blood loss. (the anesthesiologist would have likely demanded that I scrub (operate) anyway) . I did let the residents operate on my second case of the day...and let's just say, it's gonna be a long year:-(
I heard back from the examination board and they accepted my appeal to reschedule my certification exam to the end of the year. This should give me a chance to help out in the Gulf area if I'm needed. I on a few list already, but I just want to make sure my skills are utilized (I don't want to be checking people for the clap all day) There is a group leaving out in 2 weeks , I may try to hitch a ride.
Delaying my exam will allow me to make it to Jimmy's wedding and also complete a review course in Baltimore:-).......One word.....Maryland Crab Cakes ....oh yeah

Blood?
I'm performing major surgery on a patient this week who for religious reasons is refusing any and all blood transfusions. I always worry in these situations. I therefore make sure the patient understands and consents a possible outcome of death if blood products are refused.
Regardless, I'm sure that while I'm operating, everytime the patient loses a drop of blood, I'll in turn lose a drop of perspiration.

Home and Safe
My friend K is back in town from her mission trip to Louisiana. The poor thing has no time to rest as she starts her new job this week...bummer (I'm proud of her for venturing into a situation she knew nothing about to help others...that takes a hell of alot of courage). I sent a letter to the board to request a delay my exam so I could potentially go, but I haven't heard anything as of yet. From most of the information I'm getting, it's starting to sound like the need for volunteer physicians is not as great at this time......well, I'm sure I can put my skills to good use somewhere:-) I'm actually starting to see pregnant Katrina victims at my clininc.

Tempted
I went to the grocery store this morning. On my way home I notice a red sports car in my rear view mirror speeding up behind me, taunting me. It was a Ferrari. I was in my mustang with 400 hp under the hood. For a second I thought about racing him. Then the image of one of us plowing into a family of four in their minivan on their way to Sunday morning services flashed thru my head. So I ease off the gas and let him roll on by.

Bachelor Party
I bagged on jimmy's bachelor party this weeked. I was pretty bummed out about it. But I had a patient in labor and a ton of studying to do this weekend. It was on the East Coast in Baltimore and traveling would have been a bitch also. I'm sure jimmy had no less fun in my absence. I called him tonite and he seemed to be so drunk he could barely form full sentences.

Sacrifice
I drove my friend to the airport yesterday. She's a nurse who has been volunteered to travel to Louisiana with a group of about 40 other medical professionals to the Katrina crisis victims. I stayed for the pre-flight briefing since I want to do the same. The situation sounds very frightening at the New Orlean's airport. The team leader described dead bodies stacked on bodies in terminals at the airport. Areas where critically ill patients are waiting to die. A strong security presence of heavily armed air marshalls and national guardsman. The medical volunteers were told not to wear medical scrubs because they would immediately be mobbed by crisis victims seeking medications and other necessities.
My chairman described an intent to support any physician in my department who wants to travel Louisiana. I have a major boards certification exam coming up soon, I sent a wriiten request to the board hoping to get a extension on taking the exam while I volunteer my time. I hope to provide relief to some of the docs in the disaster areas.
I'll keep you informed and please pray for my friends safe return

Let's Get Off Our Asses
Fuck , I'm tired, no sleep last night. 12 deliveries and 1 cesarean section of twins in a 12 hour period. Still nothing compared to what the health care staff at Charity Hospital are going through right now. I've been reading alot of blogs regarding the crisis in the gulf coast. The blame game is at it's height. But the crisis in New Orleans emphasizes a reality that exists in the United States every day...Rampant poverty in the inner city. Elderly dying from heat exposure, families living in unsanitary overcrowded conditions and infants delivered still born secondary to insufficient pre-natal care. This stuff occurs every damn day in our wonderful country ( plus or minus the natural disaster). It's just really hard for us to accept when it plastered all over CNN and Yahoo News for 5 days straight. We can find these conditions in each and every major city. I just hope our sympathy and generosity doesn't deminish when this crisis is resolved.
My friend is currently between jobs and called me today to tell me she was strongly considering traveling to Louisiana to volunteer her nursing skills. I'm so proud of her for taking such an tremendous initiative. I want to volunteer my time with her but my patient care responsibilities won't allow such flexibility..... BUT that doesn't mean I can't volunteer my skills/time to local homeless shelters. After this crisis is over , the disease of poverty in the country will still exist
I'm off to bed. (and off my soap box)
