DC Housing Bubble
I left my home town of DC (Metro area) in the early 1990's to attend medical school and haven't lived here since. At that time a 2 or 3 bedroom townhouse in Silverspring or Bethesda went for about 150K - 170K. Now these homes are STARTING at 500K and after you purchase all the upgrades, you'll likely pay 650k to 700K. What do you get for your money? 2000 square feet, if you're lucky. A master bedroom so tiny that it cannot accommadate a kingsize bed. A one car garage. No basement. A brick front with aluminum siding. The 3rd worst traffic in the country despite being a city with one of the best public transportation systems.
I become sick when I realize that this is a representation of the entire DC housing market. My sister purchased her house in the early 90's for 180K and it is now appraised in the high 400's. Houses in her neighbor hood are going for 600k. I wouldn't pay over 150k for the same house in the Midwest, where 400K - 600K would get me all brick wrap around, 3 car garage, 4000 - 6000 sq ft, an in ground pool (some indoor), and a decent school district (if ever needed).
My family wants me to move back to DC . I did have a strong interest in moving back after residency, but the city is saturated with physicians and Ob-Gyns are making 30 - 40 k less a year in the Metroplolitan area compared to the South and Midwest. (So I'll be making less and paying for a higher cost of living) . I just can't rationalize moving back.
DC does have it positive points as a major city. But given the traffic, crime and cost of living these positives don't outweigh the negatives.
I just feel sorry for all those young families who move to the DC area and try to afford this crap with interest only mortgages....when the principle comes up they'll be paying $3000 - $5000 a month in mortgage alone!!! That makes me tremble, even on a physician's salary
Keep on renting JB!!!!

DC Wharf.
This is what I likely miss most about the nation's CAP (aside from my family). I went down to the Fisherman's Wharf today with my sister to pick up food for dinner. My grocery list included.
Fresh Lump Crab Meat
Jumbo Spiced Steamed Shrimp
Fresh Flounder Fillets
Alaskan Snow Crab Legs
Fresh Clams
Fresh Oysters
It's a good thing I do live in the Midwest now. If I lived in DC or Baltimore, I would likely be eatin this stuff 4 times a week and my cholesterol would be through the roof.
Everything happens for a reason.

4) Continuous Diversion (Labor & Delivery is filled to Capacity)
5) Emergency C-sections
6) Anesthesiologists telling me to "Fuck Off"
7) Newborns with respiratory distress

10) The Worst.....Working the night of St. Patty's day
I'm on a 1.5 week vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eleanor (1967 GTA 390 fastback)
They say if you love someone, set the free. Unfortunately that doesn't apply to Eleanor and myself. From the time I purchased this car is 2001 its been a rough relationship. She leeched my wallet dry, forced me into verbal and near physcial altercations with crooked autobody repair men and nearly killed me once or twice on the highway. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been waiting by the roadside for a flatbed. But I keep comin back for more.
When I bought my 2005 mustang, I had plans to sell her, but the deal fell through. I'm so attached now, and we've had such a history that I've decided to hold on and bring her back to her original graces. I had a potential buyer contact me yesterday and offered to purchase her as is, I told him she wasn't for sale at this time (I'm a Dumb Ass)
The pic above is what she'll look like if I succeed. She's 75% completed. I'll keep you posted.
OBTW - my 2005 mustang has also been in the shop for the last week (computer problem).
Is it me or is it FORD?

That's Just Plain Nasty
I typically have 1 medical student shadow me in the office each week. The other day I had a very eager male student who was very interested in obstetrics. I was seeing a 25 year old female for her annual exam and I decided to let the student perform her pelvic exam. Unfortunately the student was slightly uncoordinated with the speculum and causing the patient a significant amount of discomfort, therefore I traded places with him and proceeded with the exam. I placed the speculum and began performing the pap smear. The student was no less eager or motivated and began to crane his neck over my shoulder to get the closest possible view of the patient's vagina. I perform the pap smear and handed the used spatual to my nurse so she could rub it on a slide, unfortunately I did notice the student was in such close proximity to me and as I was handing the spatual to my nurse it came in intimate contact with the student's lips.
Now that's what I call dedication

GET A ROOM! Ohh, You already have one
I was on call this weekend for 24 hours. The call rooms in this private hospital are actually very nice. There is a large suite that is subdivided into smaller rooms and a shared bathroom with 3 showers. My room (the Staff Attending Room) is the largest with a comfortable bed, desk and internet access. There are 2 other smaller rooms in the suite one for the anesthesia resident and one for the medical student. The students were off for the weekend, therefore only myself and the anesthesia resident were the only occupants of the call suite.
I left my call room to attend a delivery. As I left, I noticed the anesthesia resident was escorting a young attractive woman back to his room. I don't think they noticed me. Everything went well with the delivery and returned to my call room. I went out in the suite to wash my hand in the restroom sink and noticed a female voice moaning loudly "ohhhh, ohhhh, ohhhhh baby yes" " Ohhhh baby keep doing that, you're gonna make me............" The moaning was occupanied by audible squeaking. Next, their was loud high pitched screaming,. "Yes!!! Baby Yes!!!".
I tiptoed back into my call room and quietly shut the door.
I never personally had the balls (no pun intended) to get busy with a female in my call room while I was on the clock.
#1 Their would be alot of performance anxiety knowing my pager could go off at any moment and I would have to respond to an emergency.
#2 Showing up to that emergency perspiring and with a woody in my pants would make me the butt of the nurses jokes for the rest of my career.
#3 If the sex is really good, I would be bummed if my pager went off before I did.
#4 What if my Cheif Of Staff caught me?
In summary, I reserve any action for the privacy of my own home
